The Boy Who Dreamed Of Whale Sharks…

The Boy Who Dreamed of Whale Sharks

Some dreams begin in the most unlikely places.

Not on a luxury vacation.

Not on social media.

Not with money.

Sometimes...

They begin with an old encyclopedia.

When Gio was growing up, there weren't a lot of extras.

His mom was raising three boys on her own. She worked hard, loved fiercely, and somehow made things work, but there wasn't a budget for extravagant vacations or adventures around the world. His dad wasn't very involved, so life was simpler than what many people imagine.

Every now and then, though, he would visit his grandparents in Florida.

When there wasn't much else to do, he'd sit for hours flipping through their ocean encyclopedia.

One page always stopped him.

The whale shark.

The largest fish in the ocean.

Gentle.

Beautiful.

Covered in white constellations that looked like someone had painted stars across its back.

To a little boy, it seemed almost mythical.

The kind of creature you could only dream about.

Years later, he stumbled across a video of a seven-year-old child swimming fearlessly beside one.

His first thought wasn't...

"I want to do that."

It was...

"People actually get to do that?"

He assumed it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime adventures reserved for National Geographic photographers and world explorers.

Then one day, about three years ago, he casually mentioned it to me.

By the following week...

I'd already booked the trip.

Because that's what dream chasers do.

Sometimes Dreams Don't Happen the First Time

We planned our anniversary around swimming with whale sharks.

The only problem?

We went in late August.

Gio earned his Advanced Open Water certification, and we spent nearly twelve hours searching for these incredible creatures.

Nothing.

Well...

Not exactly nothing.

We had rough seas.

A boat full of kids getting seasick.

Let's just say...

There was significantly more vomiting than whale sharks.

It was one of those adventures where you look back and laugh...

Eventually.

At the time?

Not so much.

So We Tried Again

This year, celebrating our first legal wedding anniversary, we decided unfinished dreams deserved another chance.

This time I spent far more time researching.

I found the company that actually pioneered whale shark tours in the region.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Mexican Whale Shark Tours.

Small groups.

Outstanding reviews.

Professional guides.

Worth every penny.

Yes, it meant waking Gio up before sunrise...

Again.

(Anyone who knows my husband knows this alone qualifies me for sainthood.)

Our day started at 5:30 AM, followed by about a 75-minute drive from Riviera Maya to the marina.

Breakfast.

Luxury boat.

Only six guests.

Already a completely different experience.

Then we met Jay and Kat.

One of those beautiful vacation friendships that somehow feels like you've known each other forever.

Jay had spent his career as a firefighter battling wildfires.

In the process, he lost 50% of his lung function and the use of half of his diaphragm.

Another warrior.

Another reminder that every person you meet is carrying a story you know nothing about.

By the end of the day...

They weren't just vacation friends.

They became part of our ever-growing family of warriors from around the world.

And Then...

There they were.

Not an hour into the trip.

Not after searching all day.

They were waiting for us.

More than forty whale sharks.

Forty.

I don't know if you've ever watched a 30-foot fish glide silently through impossibly blue water...

But it changes something inside you.

We slipped into the ocean with our guide, Noah.

Two swims each.

Just the two of us.

No crowds.

No chaos.

Just peaceful giants moving effortlessly through the Caribbean.

Watching Gio's face underwater was almost better than seeing the whale sharks themselves.

For just a few minutes...

He wasn't the man helping patients every day.

He wasn't worrying about schedules or responsibilities.

He was that little boy sitting on the floor in his grandparents' house...

Looking at pictures in an encyclopedia...

Only now...

He was swimming beside the creature he'd dreamed about for decades.

Some dreams are worth waiting for.

Paradise Found

After our swims, we headed to Isla Mujeres.

Crystal-clear turquoise water.

Fresh-made mahi mahi ceviche.

Warm sand.

New friends.

Stories.

Laughter.

Exactly what vacations are supposed to feel like.

By the time we dropped Jay and Kat back at their hotel and fought the afternoon traffic home...

It was 3:30 PM.

A ten-hour day.

Worth every minute.

Chase the Dream

Life has taught me something.

Most people don't regret the dreams they chased.

They regret the ones they convinced themselves were impossible.

The little boy with the encyclopedia never imagined one day he'd be swimming beside whale sharks with his wife.

The little girl who grew up wanting to heal people never imagined she'd be writing this from Mexico while preparing a genomics course for physicians and caring for patients from around the world.

Life has a funny way of rewarding people who keep saying yes.

Yes to adventure.

Yes to learning.

Yes to healing.

Yes to believing that impossible things sometimes become ordinary Tuesdays.

So if you have a dream...

Don't wait until everything is perfect.

Book the trip.

Take the class.

Start the business.

Write the book.

Call the person.

Because one day you'll wake up and realize you're no longer dreaming about the life you wanted.

You're living it.

Now if you'll excuse me...

The adventure portion of our vacation is officially complete.

Gio is happily back in relaxation mode.

And I'm about to spend the afternoon doing what I genuinely love...

Learning functional genomics.

Because apparently my idea of vacation includes whale sharks and gene pathways. 🤓🌴🧬

Have you ever crossed a lifelong dream off your bucket list? I'd love to hear what it was—and what dream you're chasing next. 💙🌊
