Check Engine Light - On or Off?

An angel gone too soon

The Check Engine Light

A story about loss, resilience, and why there is never a wrong time to invest in your health.

There are some days in medicine that stay with you forever.

Today was one of those days.

Yesterday, someone very special to our TLC family lost her husband.

She is the quiet force behind so much of what happens here. She keeps our clinic beautiful. She helps make our home feel like home. She pours so much of herself into taking care of others.

Now, it's our turn to surround her with love.

A week ago, her husband developed sudden shortness of breath. Like anyone would, she rushed him to the emergency room. The initial testing didn't reveal anything dramatic, but he was found to be in an abnormal heart rhythm. The medical team recommended a cardioversion—a procedure performed every day across the country that is generally considered very safe and highly successful.

No one imagined that he would never wake up afterward.

The scans were reassuring.

The family waited.

They hoped for a hand squeeze.

A blink.

Anything that would tell them he was coming back.

Instead, one by one, his organs began to fail. His kidneys required dialysis. His body simply wasn't recovering. Despite the incredible efforts of his medical team, his family was ultimately faced with making one of the hardest decisions any family can ever make.

My heart absolutely breaks for them.

There are moments like this that remind us how incredibly remarkable the human body truly is.

Our bodies are masters of adaptation.

They compensate.

They reroute.

They suppress symptoms.

They keep going through incredible amounts of stress.

Until one day...

They can't.

Please don't misunderstand me.

I am not saying that's what happened here.

None of us knows the full story of why this precious man didn't make it through what is typically a routine procedure. Sometimes devastating outcomes occur despite excellent medical care and despite doing everything right.

But his passing reminded me of something I tell my patients every single week...

"Feeling fine" and "functioning optimally" are not always the same thing.

Almost every week I sit across from families where one person is clearly struggling with illness while everyone else smiles and says,

"Oh...I'm fine."

Maybe they are.

Or maybe their body is simply compensating a little better today.

As a functional medicine physician, I often think of the body like a garbage can.

Every exposure...

Every infection...

Every toxin...

Every night of poor sleep...

Every period of chronic stress...

Every nutritional deficiency...

Every inflammatory event...

It all gets tossed into that garbage can.

For years, the body can keep stuffing things down.

Packing it tighter.

Finding another way to compensate.

Until one day...

The garbage can overflows.

Sometimes it looks like autoimmune disease.

Sometimes chronic fatigue.

Sometimes heart disease.

Sometimes diabetes.

Sometimes cognitive decline.

Sometimes it's simply feeling like you've lost the person you used to be.

The truth is...

The body whispers for years before it finally screams.

That's why we screen for colon cancer before symptoms appear.

That's why we monitor blood pressure before a stroke.

That's why we check cholesterol before a heart attack.

At The Lyday Center, we believe there's tremendous value in looking under the hood long before the check engine light comes on.

That doesn't mean we're looking for disease around every corner.

It means we're looking for opportunities to optimize health while you still feel well.

When someone comes to TLC for a comprehensive wellness evaluation, we may look at things such as:

🔬 Inflammatory markers to understand whether the immune system is quietly smoldering beneath the surface.

Mitochondrial health to evaluate how efficiently your cells are producing energy—the foundation of every organ in your body.

🧬 Genetic analysis to better understand inherited strengths and vulnerabilities so we can personalize prevention and wellness strategies.

🦠 Environmental exposures and chronic infections, when clinically appropriate, because sometimes hidden stressors continue to burden the immune system.

🩺 Comprehensive metabolic, cardiovascular, nutritional, hormonal, and immune evaluations to better understand how your body is functioning as a whole—not simply whether every value falls somewhere inside a reference range.

Because "normal" and "optimal" are not always the same thing.

Our goal is never to make healthy people feel sick.

Our goal is to help healthy people stay healthy.

To catch problems earlier.

To optimize function.

To support graceful aging.

To give your body every opportunity to thrive for decades to come.

As much as I absolutely love my mystery diagnosis patients...

There is something equally rewarding about sitting across from someone who feels wonderful today and helping them create a roadmap to still feel wonderful ten, twenty, or even thirty years from now.

Because prevention isn't boring.

It's one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself...

And the people who love you.

So today, hug your spouse a little tighter.

Call your parents.

Tell your kids you love them.

Book the appointment you've been putting off.

Get the labs.

Ask the questions.

Don't wait until the check engine light is flashing.

Come in while the engine is still humming beautifully, so together we can help keep it that way.

And finally...

To our newest angel...

Please watch over the family you loved so fiercely.

We promise to take good care of them.

❤️
