Doing Everything Right…
Mold, MCAS, CIRS, Babesia, Bartonella, Lyme
What Happens When You Do Everything Right... And Still Don't Get Better?
Yesterday I met one of the most incredible warrior families.
Not because they had conquered their illness.
Not because they had finally found all the answers.
But because after more than a decade of searching...
They still hadn't given up.
(Details have been changed to protect this wonderful family's privacy.)
They Did Everything Right.
This wasn't a family looking for shortcuts.
When they discovered mold in their home, they didn't simply wipe it down and hope for the best.
They moved out.
For months.
They tore apart their home.
Replaced flooring.
Found hidden water damage.
Retested.
Remediated.
Retested again.
They even brought in a mold detection dog to make sure they hadn't missed anything.
If determination alone healed people...
This family would have been cured years ago.
Then Came The Protocol
Like many families dealing with mold illness, they desperately wanted someone who understood what they were going through.
They found someone they trusted.
Someone who focused almost exclusively on the Shoemaker approach to mold illness.
And they committed.
They followed every recommendation.
The binders.
The supplements.
The nasal sprays.
The silver.
The quercetin.
The antihistamines.
Everything.
Not for a month.
Not for three months.
For over a year.
Because when someone tells you, "This is the answer," you want to believe them.
But Here's The Problem...
Nothing really changed.
The brain fog remained.
The congestion remained.
The constipation remained.
The allergies remained.
The fatigue remained.
The teenagers...
Were done.
And honestly?
I don't blame them.
Try convincing a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old to keep taking handfuls of supplements every single day when they don't feel any better.
Hope is hard to maintain when nothing changes.
This Is Where Functional Medicine Sometimes Misses The Mark
I have enormous respect for Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker.
His work fundamentally changed how many of us think about biotoxin illness and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.
He opened doors that had been closed for decades.
But here's something I believe just as strongly...
No single protocol fits every patient.
Medicine isn't meant to be practiced like following a recipe.
It's detective work.
Every patient is different.
Every immune system is different.
Every exposure history is different.
Every genetic background is different.
Every infection history is different.
If we become so committed to one philosophy that we stop asking new questions...
We stop practicing medicine.
My Question Is Always...
"Why aren't they getting better?"
Not...
"How do we get them to stay on the protocol longer?"
Those are two very different questions.
Because if someone isn't improving, I immediately start wondering...
Did we miss Lyme disease?
Bartonella?
Babesia?
Rocky Mountain spotted fever?
MARCoNS?
Mast cell activation?
Hormone deficiencies?
Heavy metals?
Mitochondrial dysfunction?
Cell danger response?
Nutrient deficiencies?
Persistent inflammation?
Connective tissue disorders?
Multiple problems often exist at the same time.
The human body doesn't read textbooks.
My Promise To Every Family That Walks Through Our Doors
I will never become more attached to my treatment plan than I am to my patient.
If you're getting better...
Wonderful.
We'll keep going.
If you plateau...
We'll reassess.
If you're getting worse...
We'll change direction.
Because my goal isn't to prove that I'm right.
My goal is to help you heal.
Sometimes that means changing medications.
Sometimes it means adding therapies.
Sometimes it means stopping treatments that clearly aren't helping.
Sometimes it means admitting we need to think differently.
That's not failure.
That's good medicine.
Hope Should Never Expire
One of the hardest things to watch yesterday wasn't the symptoms.
It was watching a family that had worked so unbelievably hard...
Wonder whether they had reached the end of the road.
They hadn't.
They had simply reached the end of one path.
There is a difference.
Sometimes healing isn't about trying harder.
It's about looking deeper.
If This Is You...
If you've been faithfully following a protocol...
Doing everything you've been told...
Taking every supplement...
Avoiding every food...
Remediating your home...
And months—or years—have gone by without meaningful improvement...
Please hear me.
That does not mean you are beyond help.
It means it's time to ask a different question.
A protocol should never become a prison.
Healing requires curiosity.
It requires flexibility.
It requires humility.
Most importantly...
It requires a physician who is willing to say,
"We haven't found it yet... but we're going to keep looking."
Because I refuse to believe that "this is as good as it gets" is the ending for people who have already fought so hard.
Sometimes the breakthrough doesn't come from trying harder.
Sometimes...
It comes from finally looking in the right direction.
❤️ Never stop searching for the "why." That's where healing begins.
