My Heart Is Hurting Today…
In Honor of a Warrior: A Patient Who Taught Me What Resilience Looks Like
This past Saturday, we lost one of our patients—someone who, in many ways, shaped my early years in functional medicine and reminded me why this work matters so deeply.
Out of respect for his family and his privacy, I won’t share identifying details or medical specifics. What I will share is the spirit he carried into every season of his healing journey.
Because his story deserves to be honored.
He was the kind of person who didn’t just want relief—he wanted understanding. He wanted to know why his body had become so inflamed, so painful, so exhausted. And he was willing to do what most people never have to do: search relentlessly for answers.
He had already seen many well-known clinicians across the country. He had tried protocols, supplements, medications, and countless approaches that promised a breakthrough. Some helped for a while. Some did nothing. And some added confusion to an already complex picture.
But he never quit.
That was his superpower.
The Kind of Patient You Never Forget
From the beginning, he showed up with a rare combination of determination and humility. He asked thoughtful questions. He tracked his symptoms. He followed the plan. And even when progress came slowly—or when a setback knocked him back hard—he returned to the work with the mindset of a warrior.
He was also the kind of patient who made our entire team feel like we were part of something bigger than medicine.
He made us laugh. He made us think. He made us care even more deeply.
He was, simply, one of our favorites.
Healing Takes More Than a Protocol
In functional medicine, we talk a lot about root causes—environment, inflammation, immune dysregulation, gut health, detox pathways, nervous system balance. But his journey reminded me of something equally important:
Healing also requires spirit.
It requires the ability to keep going when it would be easier to give up.
And he had that spirit in abundance.
Over the years, he worked through layers—taking time to address his environment, then returning to support his body, then stepping away when life required it, then coming back again. It was never linear. It rarely is.
But it was always intentional.
That kind of perseverance deserves recognition.
A Family That Never Stopped Showing Up
If you’ve ever cared for someone with complex chronic illness, you know that patients don’t walk that path alone. The families who love them become advocates, researchers, caregivers, and protectors—often while carrying their own fear and exhaustion quietly in the background.
His family was extraordinary.
They asked the hard questions. They stayed engaged. They kept pushing for clarity and safety when things didn’t add up. They advocated fiercely when it mattered most. Their resilience was a reflection of how deeply he was loved.
I hope they know how much that devotion mattered—not only to him, but to everyone who had the privilege of witnessing it.
What I Hope He Knew
I hope he knew that he was seen.
Not as a diagnosis. Not as a chart. Not as a “difficult case.”
But as a human being who kept fighting for his life with courage and grit.
I hope he knew that his persistence mattered.
I hope he knew that even when his body was tired, his spirit was powerful.
And I hope he knew that he was never alone in this journey—not here, not for a single visit.
A Message to the Mold Warriors and Chronic Illness Fighters
If you are reading this and you are in your own long healing journey, please hear me:
You may feel like no one understands how hard it is to keep going.
But we do.
And your persistence is not small. It is heroic.
This patient’s life was a reminder that the greatest victories are not always measured in lab values. Sometimes they are measured in something quieter but more profound:
The refusal to surrender.
With Deep Gratitude
To his family: we are holding you in our hearts. We are grateful for the privilege of caring for him, and we honor the love you wrapped around him through every chapter.
To our patient: thank you for trusting me and trusting our team. Thank you for your dedication. Thank you for your humor, your grit, your warrior mindset, and your unwavering determination to heal.
You will be remembered at The Lyday Center—not just as a patient, but as a presence.
Rest peacefully, Warrior.
Your spirit remains.
