The House On The Hill…

Amazing warrior - living to fight another day

The House on the Hill

Sometimes I drive past a beautiful house and catch myself thinking...

"Wow... they must have the perfect life."

The manicured lawn.

The beautiful landscaping.

The expensive cars in the driveway.

The picture-perfect family.

From the outside, it looks like they have everything.

But yesterday, I was reminded once again that we never truly know what someone is carrying behind closed doors.

A new warrior walked into my office.

On paper, she has what many people would envy.

A beautiful home.

A successful family.

Children she adores.

Strength beyond measure.

But if you sat across from her as I did, you would quickly realize that her greatest wish isn't another vacation.

Or another business success.

Or another beautiful home.

She would trade every bit of it...

For one more ordinary day with her husband.

Love at Twenty-One

Some people spend their entire lives looking for the love of their life.

She found hers at twenty-one.

They built a family together.

Raised children.

Opened businesses.

Walked through unimaginable medical challenges together.

They weren't just husband and wife.

They were teammates.

Best friends.

The kind of marriage people quietly admire because it still looked like love decades later.

Then...

Eighteen months ago...

Everything changed.

Without warning.

He stopped breathing.

She didn't freeze.

She didn't panic.

She became exactly the person every CPR instructor hopes is standing nearby.

She immediately began chest compressions.

She grabbed the AED they kept in their home because of her own history of heart block and complex cardiac disease.

She did everything right.

Everything.

For twelve long minutes, she and her son fought for the man they loved.

Sometimes...

Love doesn't lose because you didn't fight hard enough.

Sometimes...

Love loses anyway.

The Invisible Weight

As we talked, I realized something.

This woman has spent her entire life adapting.

As a child, she battled mysterious illnesses and swollen joints that kept her home from school.

As a young woman, she developed a rare heart rhythm disorder during pregnancy.

She endured multiple pacemakers.

A life-threatening device infection.

Heart failure.

An autoimmune blood disorder.

Cancer.

Another cancer.

Then another.

Major surgeries.

Radiation.

Chronic pain.

Joint injuries that seemed to appear out of nowhere.

Migraines.

Sleepless nights.

And now...

The grief of learning how to live in a world where the person you expected to grow old with is suddenly gone.

Yet somehow...

She still shows up.

She still exercises.

She still takes care of her family.

She still worries more about her children than herself.

She still wants to become healthier—not just for her own sake, but because she wants to be here for the people who still need her.

That's what warriors do.

They keep walking.

Even when their hearts are broken.

Looking at the Whole Picture

One of the things she said to me resonated deeply.

She told me she wanted someone to look at the whole picture.

Not just another specialist.

Not another organ.

Not another diagnosis.

The whole picture.

Could some of her symptoms be related to inflammation?

Could there be lingering immune dysregulation?

Could childhood infections have left lasting footprints?

Could environmental exposures, chronic infections, hormones, nutrition, or other biological factors be contributing to how she feels today?

We don't know yet.

But we're going to look.

Not because I expect to find one magical answer.

Because every piece of information helps us better understand the incredible person sitting across from me.

What Strength Really Looks Like

People often think strength is never crying.

Never struggling.

Never falling apart.

I disagree.

Strength is showing up after your world has fallen apart.

Strength is continuing to love.

Strength is continuing to hope.

Strength is deciding your story isn't over.

Yesterday I met another warrior who reminded me what courage really looks like.

Not because of everything she has survived.

But because after surviving all of it...

She still believes tomorrow can be better.

Before You Judge

So the next time you drive past the beautiful house on the hill...

Remember this.

You have absolutely no idea what battles are being fought inside.

The smiling family in the restaurant.

The successful businessman.

The woman dressed beautifully at the grocery store.

The neighbor whose lawn is always perfect.

Everyone is carrying something.

Sometimes it's visible.

Most of the time...

It isn't.

Choose kindness.

Choose curiosity.

Choose compassion.

Because behind every front door is a story you know nothing about.

And sometimes...

The strongest people you've ever met are quietly carrying the heaviest burdens.

Keep fighting, Warrior.

Your story isn't over yet. 💙
